These are the twenty most common violations we see in predatory solar contracts, grouped into four categories. Tick every box that matches your story — even if you’re not sure whether it’s "bad enough." Each one you check strengthens the analysis.

A · Sales-pitch red flags

What you were told before you signed — even if it’s not in the written contract.

"It’s free solar" / "You won’t pay anything upfront" "Your electric bill will drop to $0" (or near-zero) "You’ll get a big federal tax credit refund" or "the credit will pay down your loan" Told this was a government, utility, or state-sponsored program High-pressure closing — "today only," short deadline, or wouldn’t leave your house

B · Contract & signature red flags

What happened at the signing table.

A signature I don’t recognize, never signed, or believe was forged / traced Sales pitch was in Spanish (or another language) but the contract was English-only Told I could cancel any time (misrepresenting my 3-day rescission right) Never given a copy of the contract at signing (or received it days/weeks later) Signed on an iPad or phone without ever reviewing a paper copy

C · Financing / loan red flags

The money side — often the strongest cancellation lever.

Didn’t realize I was signing a 20–25 year loan — thought I was buying or leasing panels Explicitly told there would be no lien on my home (there is one) PACE financing with no ability-to-repay assessment done Loan balance is significantly higher than the equipment price (hidden dealer fee) Buyer was 65+, or had limited English / cognitive impairment at signing

D · Post-install & performance problems

What actually happened after the system was installed.

Electric bill went UP or stayed the same — I’m paying loan AND full utility bill Panels never activated, producing far less than promised, or system doesn’t work Roof leaks, code violations, or property damage from the install Installer disappeared, changed names, went bankrupt, or won’t answer the phone Missed payments hitting my credit report while I dispute the contract

Any post-signing changes, amendments, or additional pages.

Utility bills (6–12 months, if available)

Payment / loan statements

Loan statements or bank records showing your solar payments. Enables Check 09: Payment / Amortization Audit.

Sales materials, brochures, or emails

Anything the salesperson gave you or emailed you. Screenshots of texts also work.

Rescission notice, if you tried to cancel

Any letter or email you sent trying to cancel or rescind, plus any response received.

Anything else relevant

Videos of the sales pitch, recordings, photos of the install — anything.
